Germany backs quotas for women

German chancellor Angela Merkel is not one to shun a fight, and her governing coalition is to present a law making 30% female board members an obligation for Germany’s top companies, in the teeth of opposition from conservatives and business. The quota will be for non-executive board members, where women currently have around 25% representation, while only seven percent of executive members at the 30 largest companies are women. The initiative is being seen as spurred on by the coalition’s junior partner the SPD, and comes after similar quotas elsewhere including Norway, France, the Netherlands and Spain.
