Roman Koudelka of the Czech Republic held his nerve to claim his maiden World Cup win at the season-opening individual ski jumping event in Klingenthal on Sunday.

In the absence of the injured double Olympic champion Kamil Stoch, Koudelka, who was also the best in Friday’s qualification, cleared 138 metres with his first jump and 139.5 with his second for a winning total of 276.4 points.

Stefan Kraft of Austria was second with jumps of 142 and 136 metres for 274.1 points, while Germany’s Andreas Wellinger completed the podium despite leading at the halfway stage.

Norway’s Anders Fannemel and Peter Prevc of Slovenia finished fourth and fifth respectively.
