It was business as usual for Romania’s new ‘First Lady’ Carmen Iohannis. Instead of basking in the limelight of her husband’s victory in the capital, she headed to work at a local high school in Sibiu where she teaches English.
Though she may now be the wife of the most powerful person in the country, she hopes she can juggle her priorities.
“I try to do my duty to the best of my abilities at all times and I hope that as first lady it will be the same.”
Her students were happy to show their appreciation, decorating the white board in perfect English they wrote, “You are the Best” and “We love you”.
She even made a lesson out of her husband’s victory.
“I told my pupils that this is further proof that common sense, modesty and good intentions always win in the end.”
Her pragmatic approach appears to match her husband’s political style.
But the surprise prepared by her students didn’t allow for modesty. Lined up along the corridor, they sang “We are the champions” as she entered.
