Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says an idea from the UN’s special mediator to explore local ceasefires, starting in Aleppo, to allow humanitarian aid is “worth studying”. Mediator Staffan de Mistura says Aleppo is an “obvious candidate” to try “incremental freeze zones” to stop localised fighting and improve security. Local ceasefires have worked in places and have been mentioned by America and Russia.
