South African mourns three sporting heroes

Lovers of South African sport came to together to pay tribute to three of its greatest talents who sadly died within three days of each other.

Former 800-meter world champion and Olympic silver medalist Mbulaeni Mulaudzi died in car crash.

The national football team captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was murdered during a robbery at house in a township on the outskirts of Johannesburg.

And female boxer Phindile Mwelase died in hospital after being in a coma for two weeks after being knocked out during a fight.

South African rugby captain Jean De Villiers paid his respects to the three athletes: “It’s a sad occasion but, you know, I think we should just come together again, you know seeing the people sing like that, the supporters, it shows that the respect they had for someone like Senzo and we know we celebrating three fantastic lives today.”

All three will be buried in their respective towns over the weekend.
