A landslide in central Sri Lanka has killed at least 14 people, while over 300 are reported to be missing.

Mahinda Amaraweera, the country’s disaster management minister, says the mudslide was at least three kilometres long.

More than 140 houses are thought to have been buried in the landslide, which is believed to have been caused by weeks of heavy rain. Prior to this, a number of smaller mudfalls had blocked local transport routes, but hadn’t resulted in casualties.

In 2005 and 2012, the threat of landslides caused officials to advise villagers to move away from the hilly area.

Rescue operations have been hindered by the threat of further landslides and one official told the media hopes of finding people alive are fading.
