New York axe attacker was "self-radicalised" Islamic extremist

A man who attacked a group of police officers in New York with an axe was a “self-radicalised” Muslim convert.

The New York City police commissioner said 32-year-old Zale Thompson had converted to Islam two years ago and visited radical websites including those of al Qaeda, ISIS and al Shabaab but had no clear ties to international extremists.

The officer attacked by Thompson is now in a “critical but stable” condition after being hit in the back of the head.

Thompson was shot and killed by police.

The axe attack happened the day after a radicalised gunman shot and killed a Canadian solider in Ottawa.
