This is the calm Ukraine hopes will not precede a storm; the cooling-off period after an election campaign the people hope will on Sunday deliver a parliament freed from the cronyism and corruption of the past.
Kyiv has brought in extra security and the police are on high alert nationwide to try and ensure a peaceful and fair vote.
“Police, special forces, the national guard and armed forces of Ukraine have are now at a state of high alert. In the free territory of Donbass, anti-terror forces will pay close attention to terrorist actions and maintain security at the polling stations during voting and the count,” said the spokesman of the National Security Council Andriy Lysenko.
Arrests have already been made of groups and individuals suspected of preparing attacks on election day, and guards at every polling station will, along with observers, attempt to ensure there is no foul play.
