Axe attack on New York police officers

A hatchet-wielding attacker assaulted a group of New York City police officers, wounding two of them, one critically.

A group of four officers were posing for a photograph on a street in Queens at around 14:00 local time on Thursday (25 October).

The assailant charged at the officers, striking one officer in the right arm and another in the head.

The remaining two officers fired their weapons at the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said it was investigating potential links to Islamist extremism.

The New York attack came just a day after the Canadian capital Ottawa was rocked by shootings in the heart of the city.

Michael Joseph Zehaf-Bibeau killed a soldier at the National War Memorial before racing into the Canadian parliament building where he was shot dead.

Canadian police say Bibeau was not on a list of known high-risk travelers, but had links to extremist elements.
