Lufthansa strike causes travel misery during school holidays

More than 1400 flights have been cancelled as pilots working for the German airline Lufthansa began a two-day strike.

Short and mid-length services mostly within Europe have been hit by the stoppage. Lufthansa’s low-cost Germanwings is not affected.

The strike – the eighth this year at Lufthansa is over an early retirement scheme dispute.

The industrial action follows a long weekend stoppage by train drivers and comes at the start of half-term holidays in nearly half of Germany’s 16 federal states.
