Kurdish forces on the ground have reported that the insurgents had been largely driven out of the Syrian town, with only two pockets of resistance remaining.
The US intensified its airstrikes around the town which has been under siege for weeks. The latest attacks were designed to disrupt the militant group’s supply lines and reinforcements. However, the security situation remains tenuous.
US military talks with Turkey over its role against IS fighters went ‘very well’ according to the Pentagon but details on what Ankara is willing to do were scant.
