UN promotes family-run farms on World Food Day

October 16 is World Food Day with events taking place across the globe to focus on the importance of the family farm in ending hunger and poverty.

In large parts of the world small holder farming families are the norm and with more than 805 million hungry people world wide, the UN says they play a vital role in food production.

For example upwards of 70 per cent of people in sub-Saharan Africa rely directly on small farms for their livelihoods and helping them grow and earn more from their farms will contribute to the wealth and survival of communities.

World Food Day was first launched by the United Nations in 1981.
