Scuffles continue at holy site in Jerusalem
Israeli security forces on Monday dispersed a crowd of Palestinians who wished to enter the al-Aqsa compound in Jerusalem’s Old City. Witnesses said tensions rose after scuffles broke out overnight at the holy site.
Israeli police said it was holding security checks at the entrance to the compound and limited entry based on security assessments and it clashed with stone hurling Palestinian youths who stayed inside the holy compound overnight.
The area, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, is home to al-Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock. For Muslims, it is the place where Prophet Mohammed is believed to have ascended into heaven – the third holiest site in Islam.
