Migrant crisis in Europe getting worse

The number of exiles crossing the Mediterranean Sea has shot up this year. Amnesty says Europe is looking the other way. A €9m-a-month search and rescue programme is approaching its end. Swiss TSR tells us about a critical report published this past week.

From the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa people strike out in desperation. One year ago, a sinking off Lampedusa claimed more than 360 lives. To attend a commemoration, survivors returned to Sicily, Rai Uno reported.

Germany is clearly in the front lines with Italy as one of the countries where migrants most want to go. Asylum applications have soared. A France 2 team joined Berlin police for a day.

Germany is also reeling from an abuse scandal in an asylum centre in North Rhine Westphalia, in secure premises subcontracted to private companies. Spanish television had this coverage.
