Russian FM Lavrov launches attack on West at United Nations

Russia has launched a strong attack on the West at the United Nations. The Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov singled out American military intervention, notably in Syria – where the US has been co-ordinating airstrikes without co-operating with Damascus.

“The fight against terrorism should be based on the stable soil of international law. The attempts to act against the charter of this, our organisation, can’t help our joint efforts. The fight against terrorism in Syria should be built in co-operation with the Syrian government which has made its readiness for this very clear,” he said.

Although Russia itself has been accused of direct involvement in Ukraine, Lavrov targeted the US and the EU for their stance:

“The West has embarked on a structuring of humanity according to its standards which are far from being innocent or harmless. After the USA and EU claimed victory in the Cold war and announced the beginning of the so-called “end of history” they proceeded to enlarge the geopolitical space they took under their control. And they do not take into account the balance of the legal interests of all European nations,” he said.

Lavrov also met with his Chinese counterpart at the UN, saying Moscow wanted to cooperate more with Beijing over the economy – and to boost the roles of both countries on the world stage to maintain “peace and stability”.
