Ukraine's Poroshenko secures financial aid from Canada

In an address to Canada’s parliament, he thanked the country for promising to provide Kyiv with bullet-proof vests and helmets: military safety equipment to help it secure the embattled east of the country.

Poroshenko told MPs he wanted Ukraine and Canada to complete a proposed free trade deal.

He referred to the Ukraine-EU agreement ratified on Tuesday when he said, “…that was the last farewell from Ukraine to the Soviet Union.”

As well as Canadian cheers and standing ovations, Poroshenko received a five-year loan worth the equivalent of around 140 million euros.

Over one million Canadians are of Ukrainian descent.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko continues his tour of the region. He is due to hold talks with US President Barack Obama today (Thursday September 18). He is also expected to speak before a joint session of Congress.
