Mexican security forces have destroyed the first known coca plantation in the country.
Around 1,600 coca plants were seized in the south.
It’s the first known instance of the raw ingredient of cocaine being grown in Mexico.
Although Mexico is home to various drug cartels, coca itself is typically grown in the Andean region of South America.
Soldiers and agents discovered the plants in a town near the Guatemalan border in Chiapas, a mountainous state known for its coffee plantations.
Although native to the Andes, where it can be found from Panama to Argentina, the coca bush is very resilient.
