She’s been dubbed London’s answer to Massive Attack…
British soul singer Moko is releasing her second EP ‘Gold’.
For the lead single ‘Your Love’, the 22-year old teamed up with her mentors electronic music production duo Chase & Status.
“I had seen Will and Saul in the week before, and they had just gone to LA to do some stuff with Rihanna. And they were like ‘Do you know what, we’ve got some instrumentals that we worked on that didn’t really make it when we were doing it there.’ And so I said ‘Ok let’s have a listen, that’s fantastic,’ and then we just literally vibed in the studio and it came within less than 24 hours. It just came out. So when people ask me what are my influences, I always say, ‘I don’t know, it just happened’,” says Moko.
The young London artist of Ghanaian descent rose to fame last year after featuring on the Chase & Status single ‘Count On Me’, which peaked at number five in the UK Singles Chart and No 1 in the UK Dance Chart.
“It just happened to be number 5 and then it just happened to be a massive hit and I was like ‘Woah.’ So I feel like it was a really good thing for my career because people have a lot more awareness of who I am. And also it was a really nice thing to have that renaissance, that ’90s vibe felt really authentic, I thought.”
After learning to sing in her local church and a brief spell with the London Community Gospel Choir, Moko studied in London, where she met her production partners. In July last year, she signed to MTA, part of Virgin EMI Records.
Moko’s second EP ‘Gold’ is out now.
