The Italian navy has spent another weekend working overtime in the Mediterranean, rescuing boatloads of desperate migrants trying to reach Europe.
Sixteen hundred people were rescued from drowning, dehydration or starvation in their often dangerous, overcrowded boats. Coastguards have observed a spike in the numbers of people fleeing Eritrea.
