Austrian slalom great Marlies Schild has announced her retirement with immediate effect, bringing down the curtain on a glittering and record-breaking 12-year career.
The 33-year old’s decision was not a surprise as she announced after her last race at the World Cup finals in March that she would consider ending her career.
She said: “It is time for me to take a new path and a new part of my life is going to start now. I tell you right away, today is the last day of my active and professional career.”
Schild is the most succesful female World Cup slalom skier with 35 wins to her name.
She earned four crystal globes as the season’s best slalom skier and became the discipline’s world champion in 2011.
