Quintana takes Vuelta lead, Anacona wins 9th stage

Colombia’s Winner Anacona produced a superb solo effort to claim the ninth stage of the Vuelta a España on Sunday.

The 26-year-old overcame poor weather conditions to complete the 185-km ride from Carboneras de Guadazaón in a winning time four hours, 34 minutes and 14 seconds while Britain’s Chris Froome
lost ground.

The former Tour de France winner had been 20 seconds off previous leader Alejandro Valverde after Saturday’s stage but both riders lost time to Nairo Quintana, Alberto Contador and Joaquim Rodriguez on the final climb.

Quintana now leads the overall standings, with Contador three seconds adrift in second and Valverde now eight seconds off the pace in third.
