A religious mass has been held in Poland in remembrance of the day back in 1939 when Nazi Germany attacked the country and began World War Two.

Germany’s assault unleashed a new form of warfare – the blitzkrieg or lightning war – in which tens of thousands of troops streamed across the border backed up by squadrons of dive bombers.

The invasion and subsequent world war was to last nearly six years, put 110 million people under arms in 72 countries and resulted in 45 million deaths with some estimates putting it as high as 60 million.
