Police in Israel said a body found on Thursday is almost definitely missing American student Aaron Sofer.
A formal identification will take place following the discovery near a forest in Jerusalem.
The 23-year-old from New Jersey disappeared a week ago after going hiking with a friend.
“What we have confirmed is that the body that was found was of the missing student. Obviously there’s an investigation taking place at this moment in time to see what the background of the incident was. If the student fell and went missing or if it’s a murder case,” said Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld.
Sofer’s family flew to Israel upon hearing of his disappearance and several volunteers have also joined in the search.
The incident follows the alleged kidnapping and murder by Hamas of three Israeli students in June, which accelerated the seven week war in Gaza.
