Greece’s Ilias Iliadis produced a stunning performance to down
Krisztian Toth of Hungary in the under 90 kilo category final at the World Judo Championships in Chelyabinsk on Friday.
The 27-year-old, who took Olympic gold in Athens in 2004, triumphed by ippon en route to his third world title.
The bronze medals were won by world number one Varlam Liparteliani and Russia’s Kirill Voprosov.
Brazil’s Mayra Aguiar reigned supreme in the women’s under 78 kilo class.
The 23-year-old, who was up against Audrey Tcheumeo, edged out Olympic champion Kayla Harrison in the semis and carried her momentum in the showpiece match with a clinical waza-ari from a low uchi-mata.
Colombia’s Yuri Alvear held her nerve to beat Karen Nunira of Japan in the under 70 kilo final. The Olympic bronze medallist looked in great shape and won by ippon from a ko-uchi-gake after just 61 seconds.
After five days of competition, Japan are still top of the medal table with four gold, one silver and two bronze medals ahead of France and Georgia.
