Movistar claim Vuelta time trial

Nairo Quintana’s Movistar finished first in the 12.6km team time trial on the opening day of the Vuelta a Espana in Jerez on Saturday.

Jonathan Castroviejo led the Spanish outfit to victory in a time of 14 minutes and 13 seconds to take the leader’s jersey, six seconds ahead of nearest rivals Cannondale.

The Italian team got off to a great start and cut a few hundredths of a second from Orica’s time to come home second, giving them a major boost ahead of stage 2, a 174km leg from Algeciras to San Fernando.

2013 Tour de France champion Chris Froome endured a disappointing day as Team Sky finished back in 11th, 8 seconds behind Alberto Contador’s Tinkoff-Saxo.
