America’s Chris Horner will not defend his Vuelta a Espana title after being withdrawn from Lampre-Merida’s team on medical grounds.
The 42-year-old, who was pulled out due to low cortisol levels, will be replaced by Italian rider Valerio Conti.
The 69th edition gets underway in southern Spain on Saturday before moving to the northern part of the peninsula. It features climbs to Camperona, the lakes of Covadonga and Farrapona among 13 mid-to-high mountain stage finishes.
