Islamic State militants have released a video which they say shows Yazidis, a religious minority living mostly in northern Iraq, converting to Sunni Islam.
In the video an unnamed Islamic State fighter says: “We ask, we plead with the Yazidis to come down from the mountains and convert to Islam. Firstly to rid themselves of the final fires of Hell and secondly because if they stay up on the mountain, they will die of hunger and thirst. As for the aid from Western and crusader countries, it is a lie.”
Earlier this month aid organisations delivered emergency food and water supplies to thousands of Yazidi who have taken refuge on the mountain heights fearing execution by the militants. Videos from the scene showed families attempting to hand their children into aid helicopters.
The UN is sending more emergency food aid to Iraq, flying 2,500 tonnes of aid in from Jordan. They say the focus is particularly on helping people without shelter or housing.
It is estimated that up to 1.2 million people have been displaced in Iraq since January this year.
