Spain’s Rafael Nadal announced on Monday he will not defend his U.S. Open title this month after failing to recover fully from a wrist injury.

The 28-year-old, who beat Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in four sets to win last year’s title at Flushing Meadows, sustained the injury during practice last month and has been training with a cast on his right wrist, forcing him to miss the Rogers Cup in Toronto as well as the Cincinnati Open.

Nadal, who is currently tied with legend Pete Sampras for the second most major titles in the history of men’s tennis, hasn’t competed since losing in the fourth round of Wimbledon to 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios on July 1.
