Contador confirms Vuelta start

Spain’s Alberto Contador has confirmed he will take part in the Vuelta a Espana after recovering from the broken shin bone which ruled him out of the Tour de France.

The 31-year-old crashed during the 10th stage of cycling’s most prestigious race on July 15 and had originally said he would not be able to recover in time for his home Grand Tour.

Contador, who has won the Vuelta twice, in 2008 and 2012, has recovered faster than expected and will start the three-week race without any general-classification ambitions, only targeting stage wins.

The Vuelta begins with a time trial in Jerez de la Frontera on August 23.
