Venezuela and Colombia are to close their shared border for the first time in an effort to combat smuggling.
Seventeen thousand troops are being deployed
in the hope that the temporary measure will stop the smuggling of fuel and food between the two countries, which accounts for millions in lost profits, especially for Venezuela.
The initiative will see the 2,200 kilometre border between Colombia and Venezuela close for seven hours each night from 22.00 local time.
The authorities said they will be evaluating the impact of the measures over the next 30 days.
