Phelps suffers setback

Local hope Michael Phelps suffered the first significant setback of his return to competition when he finished seventh in the final of the 100m freestyle at the US Swimming Championships in California on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old, who ended a near two-year retirement in April, was last at the turn as London Olympic champion Nathan Adrian completed the race in a winning time of 48.31 seconds.

Phelps still has three chances to make the United States team for this month’s Pan Pacific Championships, with further races coming up in the 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke and 200m individual medley.
