Two migrants died when a boat carrying nearly three hundred people sank off the coast of Libya. The bodies recovered were of a woman and a child around nine years of age.
The Italian navy said it rescued more than 2,700 people during the weekend. They were attempting to get from the north coast of Africa to Europe.
A pregnant woman with severe bleeding was transported by helicopter. More than one hundred children were rescued, all in good health.
Authorities say more than 60,000 migrants have already landed in southern Italy this year, and that the record of 63,000 set in 2011 is likely to be broken.
