The first official test event for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro got underway on Sunday as more than 320 athletes from 34 countries gathered for the International Sailing Regatta featuring 10 Olympic sailing events.
The test event comes under the backdrop of concerns surrounding the polluted waters of Rio’s Guanabara Bay where Olympic hopefuls will battle it out exactly two years from now.
During the bidding process for the Olympic Games, the city of Rio committed itself to properly preparing its long-neglected waters to host aquatic sporting events.
One of the promises the government made was to treat 80 percent of sewage that makes its way into the bay.
The sailing event is the first of 45 Olympic test events to be held in Rio leading up to the Games which get underway in August 2016.
