South Korean businessman Cho Yang-ho has been named as the new president of the organising committee for the 2018 Winter Games.
He led Pyeongchang’s successful bid for the Olympics, but his appointment comes as a surprise as he had initially said he was too busy with his business affairs.
Cho replaces Kim Jin-sun who resigned suddenly last week as president of the organising committee in the middle of a review by the Board of Audit and Inspection.
But an official at the Ministry of Culture, Sport and Tourism denied the review was the reason behind Kim’s departure, which follows the vice-president and secretary general.
The International Olympic Committee has welcomed Cho’s appointment and says the governing body is looking forward to working with Cho once more.
