Contador avoids surgery

Spain’s Alberto Contador, who withdrew from the Tour de France with a leg injury on Monday, flew to Madrid on Tuesday for medical treatment.

Despite breaking his shin on stage 10, the 31-year-old does not need surgery and will be looking to defy the odds and recover in time for next month’s Spanish Vuelta.

Contador previously won the Tour in 2007 and 2009 but was stripped of his 2010 title after testing positive for a banned substance.

The Spaniard follows Chris Froome out of this year’s race after the Team Sky rider’s hopes of winning back-to-back titles ended last week when he crashed out on stage five.
