Car bomb rips through Afghan market killing 89 people

At least 89 people have been killed and dozens injured in a suicide attack in Afghanistan.

According to local officials, a 4×4 vehicle loaded with explosives was driven into a packed market in the eastern province of Paktika.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident, with the Taliban denying any involvement.

Mohibullah Sameem, the Governor of Paktika province, spoke to reporters whilst visiting the site of the blast:

“The enemies of Afghanistan detonated a car bomb in this area that martyred a huge number of our people and also wounded some of our young people. If you look at this destruction you will come to the conclusion that this action is against humanity and against our territory”

Initial reports suggest many women and children were caught in the blast. The attack took place near Pakistan’s restive border region of Waziristan.
