Argentina are in a World Cup final for the fifth time in their history after beating the Netherlands 4-2 in a penalty shootout.
The victory over the Dutch in Sao Paulo means they will now face Germany at the Maracana in Rio on Sunday.
Argentina’s joy compounds the misery of Brazil who were trounced 7-1 by Germany in Tuesday’s other semi-final.
The prospect of winning in the hosts heartland was not lost on fans.
‘‘I feel it in my soul. Go Argentina. Our title is coming and Brazil will be left with nothing,’‘ said one woman.
Sunday’s showpiece will be the third time Argentina and Germany have met in a World Cup final.
Despite the German team’s recent blistering form, Argentina’s fans remain full of confidence they will soon be three time winners.
‘‘We are going to win the final. We are going to win the cup,’‘ one man declared.
Reporting from Buenos Aires for euronews, Andrea Rua Espada said: ‘‘Argentina is celebrating victory and they still haven’t played Germany yet, a team Argentina have faced in the World Cup final twice before. In 1986 they won, while in 1990 it was Germany. After so many years of waiting to get this far, Argentina and their fans already feel like winners.’‘
