Portugal: huge cocaine shipment found in boxes of supermarket bananas

Portuguese police have seized 237 kilograms of cocaine inside shipments of bananas from Colombia.

The boxes of fruit had been delivered to a warehouse in the north of the country and then distributed seven branches of the German supermarket chain Lidl.

Portuguese media reported that the police were alerted by a customer who found packages of drugs inside a box of bananas on a supermarket shelf.

Fernando Xavier of Portugal’s Criminal Investigation Department told reporters: “To have an idea of 237 kilos, we can say basically that in the market this is two and a half million doses, worth 11 million euros.”

Portuguese police said they would work with other countries to find the “criminal organisation” responsible for the illegal shipment.
