King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain have had an audience with Pope Francis in the Vatican.
It is the couple’s first trip abroad after succession to the throne and Felipe’s first international trip as head of state.
Queen Letizia wore white, as is the standard protocol for a queen visiting the pope.
The royal couple were greeted by the pope in the papal library where they exchanged gifts.
Pope Francis spoke privately with the royals for around 40 minutes.
According to Italian media, the king invited the pontiff to visit Spain.
