Romania’s parliament has asked the president to resign after his businessman brother was detained for allegedly taking bribes.
Parliament’s vote, which is not binding, was approved by 344 MPs with 17 abstenstions, while two centre-right opposition parties refused to participate.
President Traian Basescu has made it clear he will not quit and has denied all knowledge of his brother Mircea’s alleged dealings with an underworld crime boss to shorten his jail sentence.
Romania will vote for a new president in November as Basescu cannot run for a third term.
His brother is being held for 60 days while prosecutors investigate the accusations.
