Iraq: Insurgents take control of parts of Tikrit

Several parts of the Iraqi city of Tikrit have reportedly been taken over by the militant group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Located just 150 km from Baghdad, the city is the hometown of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Earlier militants also reportedly seized 48 Turks in an attack on the Turkish consulate in the northern city of Mosul, including the consul-general.
