Laborde wins on home soil

Local hope Maria Celia Laborde won the gold medal at the Havana Grand Prix on Saturday after upsetting compatriot Dayaris Mestre Alvarez in the under 48 kilo category.

France’s Automne Pavia reigned supreme in the under 57 kilo class. The European champion outclassed Sabrina Filmozer of Austria with this clinical ippon in the dying moments.

In the men’s event, Georgia’s Amiran Papinashvili produced a stunning performance to clinch the under 60 kilo category.

The World number two beat Israel’s Artiom Arshanki in the semis and carried his momentum into the showpiece match with a convincing win over Eric Takabatake of Brazil.

Elsewhere, Russia’s Mikhail Pulyaev kept his composure to down Sugoi Uriarte in the under 66 kilo final while Cuba’s Yanet Bermoy Acosta won the under 52 kilo class after her opponent Erika Miranda was forced to withdraw due to injury.
