France’s influential winger Franck Ribéry has been ruled out of the World Cup with lower back problems, dealing a severe blow to the team’s chances of progression in the competition.
He was instrumental in their qualifying campaign, scoring five goals and creating numerous chances for his team mates.
According to coach Didier Deschamps, attacking midfielder Clément Grenier won’t play due to a groin problem.
The pair are expected to be replaced in the squad by Morgan Schneiderlin and Remy Cabella.
As the replacements were made after the June 2 squad submission deadline, they will have to be validated by the FIFA world governing body.
France will begin their World Cup campaign on June 15 against Honduras in Group E.
