Two-dinner Hollande keeps Obama and Putin apart

French President Francois Hollande has hosted separate dinners with his US and Russian counterparts.

The meals were planned to avoid a direct meeting between the American and Russian leaders, who were both in France for the D-Day commemorations.

Hollande met with US President Barack Obama at a Parisian restaurant off the famous Champs-Elysees avenue.

The two heads of state were joined by US Secretary of State John Kerry and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

The French president later met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Elysee Palace.

Diplomats have suggested that Hollande wants to set up a first meeting between Putin and Ukrainian President-elect Petro Poroshenko on French soil.
