Spain’s Prince Felipe of Asturias has promised to serve his country in his first public address since his father King Juan Carlos announced his intention to abdicate.
The prince made his comments while attending a prize giving ceremony with his wife Princess Letizia, at the Leyre Monastery in Navarre.
“Allow me to respect the parliamentary process which had been initiated and to limit myself publicly to reiterate my conviction and desire to dedicate all my strength, with hope and enthusiasm to the passionate job of continuing to serve the Spanish people.”
Meanwhile King Juan Carlos was visibly moved when he was given a standing ovation when he visited a bullring in Madrid.
As Spain has no set procedure for an abdication, Prince Felipe will succeed his father as king after legislation is approved by parliament in around two weeks time..
