Royal Canadian Mounted Police have intensified a manhunt after three officers were shot dead and two injured in a rare case of gun violence in the east coast city of Moncton.
The incident happened on Wednesday evening when police responded to a call about an armed man. They are now said to be looking for a 24-year-old local man called Justin Bourque, who is believed to be in possession of high-powered weapons.
Police have cordoned off a large area in the northwest of the city and warned residents to stay indoors.
George Le Blanc, the city’s mayor, expressed his disbelief at the incident.
“Never in my darkest dreams did I ever think that we would be facing what we are facing today in Moncton,” he said. “Moncton has always been a special community and if this can happen in Moncton, it can happen anywhere.”
