Ukraine's new president outlines plans for peace

The newly elected Ukrainian President, Petro Poroshenko has been outlining his plans to end clashes between separatists and government forces in eastern Ukraine.

Promising to decentralise power; an amnesty and local elections, Poroshenko would not commit to meeting Russian President Putin later in the week.

It is envisaged Putin and Poroshenko would have the opportunity to meet when the two leaders attend the anniversary of the World War II D-Day landings this week in France.

When asked whether US help could provoke Russia, his answer was unequivocal. “I cannot imagine how Russia can be more provoked,” he said. “Russia is already sending the soldiers of fortune. We have lots of evidence of Russia’s participation. I cannot imagine what other things Russia can do if Ukraine does not demonstrate the ability to defend its territory.”
