Over 40,000 people crowded into Tokyo’s National Stadium on Saturday to bid farewell to an arena originally built for the city’s 1964 Summer Olympics.
In its place a new stadium for the 2020 Games will be built which is set to have 80,000 seats – up from 54,000 at present.
The new spaceship-like stadium was designed by Zaha Hadid, who also designed the aquatics centre for the 2012 London Olympics.
The demolition of the National Stadium will begin in July with the arena scheduled to be completed in time for the Rugby World Cup in 2019.
