World number one and defending champion Serena Williams was eliminated from the French Open on Wednesday.
On a windy and chilly day in the French capital the American top seed suffered a shock second-round exit at the hands of Spain’s Garbine Muguruza.
The 17-times grand slam champion failed to get going against the 20-year-old world number 35, who enjoyed a 6-2, 6-2 victory for the biggest win of her young career.
Serena’s defeat came just one hour after her older sister Venus also suffered a shock exit.
She was beaten by Slovak teenager Anna Schmiedlova, who plays Muguruza in round three.
19-year-old Schmiedlova recovered from losing the first set 2-6 to stun her more illustrious opponent winning the last two sets 6-3, 6-4.
