France's UMP is focus of funding accusations

France’s UMP party has admitted to so called “anomalies” in the covering of costs for Nicolas Sarkozy’s failed 2012 election campaign.

A lawyer for event organiser Bygmalion has accused the UMP of ordering fake invoices to cover campaign expenditure.

Sarkozy’s campaign director denies any wrongdoing or that his boss was aware of funding procedures.

Its alleged expenses were being listed as “other operations” because costs had gone beyond a legal ceiling.

In total the invoices are said to have amounted to around 11 million euros.
